Bio
The first time I heard the name SIMI was when my date divulged her plans for our evening back in March 2001. After she tossed off a quick verbal sketch of a violin-slinging, guitar-based, female-fronted Manhattan quartet, I anticipated a low key night at CB's Gallery hosted by a sincere crooner, accompanied by session guys perched on stools, sharing their musical stylings with a considerate, seasoned audience.
My date had instructed me to meet her "at CBGB's", but what did she know about the dowtown club scene? CB's is for tattoos and Marshalls. The Gallery is for violins and, well, people like my date. So when I'm directed next door by the Gallery ticket guy, I am sure he's gotten it wrong, too. But next door I go, scratching my head, hoping I'm not going to spend the evening solo. Again.
The crowd is thick from the stage back to the end of the bar. Everyone is on their feet. There is a tight mosh pit. There are a lot of pretty girls.
It sounds like rock, but unlike anything I've heard before. The guitars sound like Seattle but the vocals remind me of Ronettes hooks. The distorted violin sounds like a sadistic symphony orchestra demanding submission. The song sounds like something I heard on 92.3 but it's far too cool for that purgatory. And the lead singer is total eye candy. Why haven't I heard of these guys before?
SIMI rock. They are in complete control and this infectious, intense energy is pouring from them directly into the heart of CB's. They are tight, charismatic, and blisteringly loud. Their songs are a straight-from-the-gut, rock/R&B/punk blend that has nothing to do with any flavor-of-the-week musical trend. They are, hands down, the best unsigned band I have ever seen.
After the show, I scramble through the throng to buy a CD and hound the band. I'm a music writer in NY, what can I do for you guys? Well, we could use a press piece telling something about us, Simantha says. I'd be more than happy to write my honest impressions, I gush. Cool, she says.
Simantha Sernaker (violin, guitar and vocals), Chris Bowers (bass), Jason Chasko (guitar) and Deke Rivers (drums) have hit upon something uplifting, kinetic, turbo-charged, and compelling. SIMI have taken up the torch that was first lit in the petri dish from which the Ramones and Blondie sprang and are confidently carrying it through to its logical evolution. Rock is here and its name is SIMI.
They've been billed with Cheap Trick, Fun Lovin Criminals, Joan Jett, and Veruca Salt. It is simply a matter of time until they headline themselves. They've played national festivals in New York, New Jersey, Illinois and Wisconsin. they've been featured on the Warped Tour and Woodstock '99. Their loyal, fast-growing fanbase includes Maxwell, Sade, the late Joey Ramone and me,

"reminds me a bit of Annabella from Bow-Wow-Wow ... she's beautiful and has a sweet sexy innocence - they're very dark and diverse ... heavy and infectious, great guitar playing. They remind me a bit of early Smashing Pumpkins but much more exciting." - Joey Ramone
